When my son Michael was little, our favorite place to eat was the local China buffet. It was a small-town treasure, and after every meal, the server would bring us all fortune cookies. We'd each take turns reading our fortunes aloud — except for Michael. He was too young to read at the time, so he’d pass me his cookie and ask with big, eager eyes,
“What does mine say?”

And every time, I’d tell him:
